Arriving at the campsite at Elkhart park we quickly realised that it was all very primitive with only a toilet, picnic tables and bear containers. But no running water, no trash cans and no electricity. And there we were, all prepared for the hike. But having being dropped off in a car we hadn’t really thought hiking yet and arrived with a yoghurt, bottles of kombucha and a water melon. All which we had intended to finish before starting the hike. But what to do with the trash? And charging batteries would have been nice as well before disappearing into the wilderness for days!
Setting up camp we met our neighbor Brian, who stayed at the campground in his campervan. Being retired, he travels and hikes in the US all year aound and provided some really helpful information about hiking in the area. And offered to take our trash into town, charged my batteries with his solar panel and even gave us one of his maps that had more information about the area. And told us in the morning before we left that he was inspired by our adventure and was just planning a new hike like ours. When in fact the inspiration was him!

Als wir auf dem Campingplatz im Elkhart Park ankamen, stellten wir schnell fest, dass dort alles nur sehr primitiv war, also nur eine Toilette, Picknicktische und Bärenbehälter. Aber kein fließend Wasser, keine Mülleimer und kein Strom. Auf die Wanderung waren wir zwar vorbereitet, aber da wir mit dem Auto gekommen waren, hatten wir noch nicht wirklich an den Start gedacht und kamen mit Joghurt, Melone und zwei Flaschen Kombucha an. Alles was wir vor Beginn der Wanderung noch wegschmeißen wollten. Aber wohin mit dem Müll? Und die Akkus nochmal richtig aufzuladen wäre auch schön gewesen, wenn wir schon tagelang in der Wildnis verschwinden wollten.
Als wir unser Lager aufbauten, trafen wir auf unseren Nachbarn Brian, der mit seinem Wohnmobil auf dem Campingplatz stand. Als Rentner reiste und wanderte er das ganze Jahr durch die USA und lieferte uns ein paar wirklich hilfreiche Informationen zum Wandern in diesem Gebiet. Und bot uns dann sogar an unseren Müll mitzunehmen, meine Batterien über seine Solarzelle aufzuladen und gab uns auch noch Karten mit weiteren Informationen über die Gegend. Und erzählte uns am Morgen bevor wir los gingen, dass er von unserem Abenteuer inspiriert wäre und jetzt auch eine Wanderung wie unsere plante. Dabei war er die eigentliche Inspiration!
